A wall of the provisions warehouse has collapsed. Sinse
we thought everything would collapse we fled to the
garden, where we stayed until sunset when the earth-
quake activity abated. The earthquake has not caused
much damage. Only the Doorn has been slightly
damaged.

have left our houses and have settled in the garden.

13 Around five o'clock we felt a very severe
earthquake. We thought everything would collapse. The
earthquake has caused much damage. We fled to the gar-
den in our nightshirts and took shelter under the trees.
Bronswinkel, De Laver and Visscher reported that the
Lelie had not been damaged but that the Doorn had been
severely hit. Its roof has been blown off. There is a
cleft in the earth at the back of the Lelie. We have de-
cided to put up a tent in the garden. Since our houses
have been damaged we will camp there for a couple of
days.
We are all very nervous but we put our trust in God.
The earthquake activity has continued already for
seventy-four days.
14 We have all slept in the tent in the garden. The in-
terpreters told me that many warehouses on the Chinese
island had collapsed and that the earthquakes had caused
great damage in the city. Many people have been wound-
ed or have perished.
15 The interpreters announced that I had received per-
mission for the court journey.
I asked them who would shoulder the costs for Keijser's
trip. I wish I could flee away from this country.
